Bioballs and Water Filtration
Bioballs are used in a wide spectrum of water filtration applications, but primarily as a way to biologically clean the water. One of the most popular ways to do this is by using a wet/dry or trickle filter. In this application a filter is fitted with bioballs and the water to be treated is allowed to pass over and through the bioballs to the bottom of the filter. The water is then pumped back to its source. As the water passes over the bioballs it mixes with oxygen to facilitate the growth of beneficial bacteria on the bioballs. The beneficial bacteria on the bioballs interact with the toxic ammonia so that it can be broken down into less harmful nitrates. The trickle effect increases dissolved oxygen levels in the water source and cleans the water as the beneficial bacteria combines with organic waste to dissolve it. Using bioballs for biological filtration of water is extremely attractive for both freshwater and saltwater enthusiasts. It cycles the water and makes it both cleaner and safer for your prized fish.
